Warning Signs After Myomectomy: When to Call the Doctor

Every twinge in the first weeks starts the same internal debate: is this normal healing, or the thing I was warned about? Here is the short list that ends the debate.

Short answer. Normal recovery has one signature: things improve — pain eases, bleeding fades, energy climbs, even if unevenly. The warning signs are the reversals: fever, pain that worsens instead of easing, bleeding that turns heavy or foul-smelling, a wound growing red or leaking, trouble passing urine, or a swollen painful leg and breathlessness. Any of those earns a same-day call — and the leg-and-breathing pair earns urgent care, not a waiting room debate.

Normal healing versus a warning: the direction test

Recovery from fibroid surgery is noisy — twinges, pulling sensations at incisions, tiredness, mood dips and spotting are all part of the ordinary soundtrack. What separates noise from signal is direction over days: healing trends better, complications trend worse. A day that is worse than yesterday happens; a third day worse than the first two is a pattern, and patterns are what deserve the phone call. When in doubt, the call itself is never the wrong move.

The same-day-call list

None of these means disaster — each means the recovery has left the expected script and your team should hear about it today rather than at the scheduled follow-up.

SignWhy it matters
Fever or shaking chillsThe classic flag of a developing infection
Pain worsening after having easedHealing pain fades; new or growing pain is a signal
Bleeding turning heavy or foul-smellingPoints to bleeding or infection inside
Incision growing red, hot, or leakingA wound infection announcing itself
Burning or difficulty passing urineUrinary infection or retention needing review

The go-immediately list

A much shorter list bypasses the phone tag entirely. A swollen, painful calf — especially one-sided — can mean a clot in the leg veins; sudden breathlessness, chest pain or coughing blood can mean that clot has traveled to the lungs. Severe abdominal pain with a rigid belly, fainting, or bleeding that soaks pads hour after hour belong in the same category. These are emergency-department presentations: the right response is to go, not to observe overnight and see.

PresentationResponse
One-sided calf swelling and painUrgent same-day assessment for a clot
Sudden breathlessness or chest painEmergency care immediately
Rigid, severely painful abdomenEmergency care immediately
Soaking pads hourly, or faintingEmergency care immediately

At our clinic in Türkiye, every patient leaves with this exact list in writing and a direct number to reach us — because the calls we most want to receive are precisely the ones patients most hesitate to make.

Warning signs — questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about complications and when to seek help.

QuestionShort answerWhat to do
How do I know pain is abnormal? It grows over days instead of fading.Track the direction, not single moments.
What temperature counts as fever?Use the threshold your team gave you.Measure properly; report chills regardless.
Is calling for something minor embarrassing? No — teams prefer needless calls to missed ones.Call whenever direction turns wrong.
Why is a swollen calf so urgent? It can signal a clot that may travel.Same-day assessment, always.
Do warning signs mean the surgery failed? No — complications are treatable events.Early reporting keeps them small.

I end every discharge talk the same way: I would rather answer ten unnecessary calls than miss the one that mattered, so the threshold for dialing is low by design. Healing gets better by the week — anything moving the other way has my number.
