Diagnostic Hysteroscopy in Turkey: The Gold Standard for Detecting Uterine Problems

What is diagnostic hysteroscopy? Is it painful? Learn about this precise method for diagnosing infertility, abnormal bleeding, and uterine polyps. Expert care in Istanbul with Dr. Cengiz Andan.

Illuminating the Mysteries Inside Your Uterus

In women’s health, ultrasound is an invaluable tool, but when it comes to evaluating the uterine cavity (endometrium), it sometimes only provides “shadows” or “suspicious images.” To eliminate doubt and achieve a definitive diagnosis, the solution is Diagnostic Hysteroscopy.

This procedure is an advanced gynecological technique that allows for direct visualization of the uterine cavity using a lighted camera system. At Dr. Cengiz Andan’s Clinic in Istanbul, we don’t rely on guesswork for unexplained bleeding, recurrent miscarriages, or IVF failures. Instead, we look directly inside with a hysteroscope to identify the root cause with 100% accuracy.

  1. What is Diagnostic Hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a procedure performed through the vagina and cervix, requiring no external cuts or incisions. The instrument used, a hysteroscope, is an optical system thinner than a pencil (3-5 mm diameter) equipped with a light source and a high-definition camera.

This system allows the doctor to scan the uterus in detail for polyps, fibroids, adhesions, septums, or signs of cancer. The images are projected onto a screen, magnified, and examined in real-time.

  1. When is it Recommended?

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is the Gold Standard for the following conditions:

  • Abnormal Bleeding: Heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or post-menopausal bleeding (to rule out polyps or cancer).
  • Infertility Investigation: To check if the womb is “baby-ready” before starting IVF treatment.
  • Recurrent Miscarriages: To investigate for a uterine septum (wall) or shape abnormalities.
  • Suspected Asherman’s Syndrome: For patients with reduced menstrual flow after a D&C.
  • Lost IUD: To locate a contraceptive coil when the strings are not visible.
  • Suspicious Ultrasound Findings: To confirm a diagnosis when ultrasound shows a thickened lining or irregularity.
  1. The Procedure: Step-by-Step

Diagnostic hysteroscopy is typically a day-case procedure that does not require an overnight hospital stay.

  1. Anesthesia: Since the instruments are very thin, the procedure is generally painless. For patient comfort, light sedation (“twilight sleep”) or local anesthesia can be used.
  2. Visualization: The hysteroscope is gently guided through the cervix. The uterus is expanded with a sterile saline solution to separate the walls and provide a clear view.
  3. Examination: The doctor meticulously inspects every corner of the uterus, including the openings of the fallopian tubes (ostia), the roof, and the side walls.

  1. Biopsy: If a suspicious area is seen, a tiny tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken immediately.
  2. Duration: The procedure typically takes just 10 to 15 minutes.
  1. Advantages: Why Choose Hysteroscopy?
  • Definitive Diagnosis: unlike HSG (dye test) or ultrasound which provide indirect information, hysteroscopy offers a direct visual diagnosis with zero margin for error.
  • Biopsy Capability: Suspicious areas can be sampled immediately for pathology.
  • Fast Recovery: With no cuts or stitches, patients return to normal life the same day.
  • Transition to Treatment: If a simple polyp or small adhesion is found during diagnosis, we can switch to “Operative Hysteroscopy” in the same session to treat the problem immediately (the “See and Treat” principle).
  1. Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery after diagnostic hysteroscopy is very quick.

  • Pain: You may feel mild cramps similar to period pain after the procedure, which resolve with simple painkillers.
  • Bleeding: Spotting for 1-2 days is normal.
  • Daily Life: Patients are discharged 1-2 hours after the procedure and can return to work the next day.
  • Precautions: We recommend avoiding intercourse for 1-2 days to prevent infection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Is this procedure very painful? No. Diagnostic hysteroscopy instruments are very thin (3-4 mm). Most patients feel only mild pressure or cramping. For those with low pain tolerance, sedation ensures a completely pain-free experience.
  2. Can it be done for virgins?Standard hysteroscopy uses a vaginal approach which can affect the hymen. However, in critical medical situations (e.g., life-threatening bleeding), a “Vaginoscopic” technique using ultra-thin instruments can be attempted to preserve the hymen, but this must be discussed in detail with the doctor.
  3. How is it different from HSG (dye test)?HSG is an X-ray that provides “shadow” images and is mainly used to check if fallopian tubes are open. Hysteroscopy uses a camera to show the inside of the uterus in full color and detail. For uterine problems, hysteroscopy is far superior.
  4. Can I get pregnant after the procedure?Yes. The procedure does not harm the uterus. In fact, by “flushing” the cavity and clearing minor adhesions, it can improve the chances of pregnancy.
  5. What is Office Hysteroscopy? This refers to performing diagnostic hysteroscopy in the examination room (office) without the need for an operating theater or general anesthesia. At Dr. Cengiz Andan’s clinic, this patient-friendly method is frequently preferred for suitable cases.

Dr. Cengiz Andan builds your treatment plan not on “guesses,” but on the “facts” provided by advanced imaging technology, ensuring the precise detection of uterine issues.
