(Minimally Invasive Fibroid Removal)
Laparoscopic myomectomy is the procedure for removing fibroids (myomas)—benign (non-cancerous) tumors located in the uterus—using a minimally invasive (“closed”) method, without a large abdominal incision. Today, this method offers significantly less pain, a faster recovery time, and aesthetic advantages compared to classic open surgery.
Fibroids are common, especially in women between the ages of 30 and 50. Factors such as genetic predisposition, estrogen hormone levels, obesity, and delayed childbearing can influence fibroid development. Not every fibroid requires treatment, but surgery may be necessary in certain situations.
Fibroids larger than 5 cm
Severe menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
A feeling of bloating and pressure in the abdomen
Urinary or bowel problems (pressure symptoms)
Fibroids that interfere with fertility (obstructing pregnancy)
Submucosal fibroids that distort the uterine cavity
It is performed under anesthesia.
A camera and special instruments are inserted into the abdomen through small (0.5-1 cm) incisions in the navel (umbilicus) and lower abdomen.
The fibroids are removed using special tools, and the uterine wall is repaired (sutured).
If necessary, the removed fibroids are cut into smaller pieces (morcellation) to be extracted safely without damaging tissues.
The patient is discharged the same day or 1 day later.
No large abdominal incision (cosmetic/aesthetic advantage)
Less pain and less blood loss
Shorter hospital stay
Faster return to daily life
Lower risk of adhesions (scar tissue)
High fertility-preserving effect
As with any surgery, risks exist. Infection, bleeding, organ injury, or the potential need to convert to an open procedure during the operation may occur. These risks are minimized when performed by an expert gynecological surgeon.
Gas and abdominal pain may occur on the first day.
A return to daily activities is possible within 3-5 days.
Full recovery usually occurs within 2-4 weeks.
It is generally recommended to wait 3-4 weeks for sexual intercourse and exercise, based on the doctor’s advice.
As long as the uterus is preserved (which it is in a myomectomy), most women can conceive successfully after the surgery. The type, location, and number of fibroids can affect fertility, which is why pre-operative planning is very important.
Laparoscopic myomectomy is one of the most comfortable solutions offered by modern gynecological surgery. If fibroids are impacting quality of life, threatening fertility, or showing growth, they can be safely and effectively treated with this method.
